Membership

Word is spreading about our cohousing project !

We are attracting members who wish to live in a community where people know each other, and want to share activities and events together. There is a great deal of interest in both gardening and preparing food. Members come from varied backgrounds and professional lives.

Members  want to have a say in how they live their lives.  The Fernwood Urban Village  is designed to facilitate persons in all stages of life, with special considerations to allow one to ‘age in place’

Applications for membership are being accepted now.

How to join

There is a procedure  to follow to apply for a membership in the Village.  Our membership want to be assured that an applicant has a clear understanding of how the Village operates, and feels comfortable with our consensus decision making and management process.

The procedure is as follows:

  • contact us by e-mail and we will send you a Membership Application. Fill it out and return it to us.
  • The application is reviewed and applicants  may be invited to attend governance meetings or social events to learn how we function.
  • After this has been done, an applicant may be invited to become a member.
  • To confirm, a  deposit of $250 is required from each applicant or couple. This is a good-will deposit and is non-refundable.  It is not a commitment to purchase a unit,  nor a commitment on the part of the Village to provide a unit.
Prior to our rezoning, members are entitled to participate in community decision making, space planning and social activities as the community forms itself.

If you are interested in joining us as a member, then please contact us

Legal

The Village has an official constitution and by-laws, in accordance with the Strata Act of BC. These documents formalize the vision, mission and principles of our community. Residents make decisions and rules based on this format.  All member/owners are issued a certificate of title to their home.  Owners may mortgage their unit if they choose.
